Heating and Air Mechanic – Skilled HVAC Work in a Unique Facility Setting

We're hiring a dependable HVAC mechanic to handle hands-on installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems across a variety of buildings and equipment. You'll work on everything from boilers and chillers to walk-in coolers and air handlers—keeping systems running safely and efficiently in a one-of-a-kind environment that includes animal care areas, food service spaces, and guest facilities.

 

 

Responsibilities

Responsible for installation, diagnosis and repair, preventative maintenance, and general efficient operation of equipment which supplies heat, air conditioning and refrigeration to facilities.

 

HVAC System Maintenance & Repair

  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs HVAC units at regular intervals to ensure efficient operation.
  • Adjust and repairs cooling systems units such as compressors, motors, air cooling coils, and chillers.
  • Adjusts and repairs heating systems such as hot water boilers, forced air gas furnaces, electric heat pumps.
  • Adjusts and repairs refrigeration systems such as coolers and freezers for food storage.
  • Adjusts thermostatic controls of heating, cooling and refrigeration units to keep temperature at specified levels.

Installation & Equipment Handling

  • Installs HVAC filters, screens and works with HVAC duct installation.
  • Operates hand-held power tools and other instruments used to repair or calibrate HVAC equipment and keeps equipment in good working order.
  • Maintains adequate spare parts inventory to efficiently perform work assignments.

Team Support & Safety

  • Provides support and assistance with all activities related to special events such as Eggs, Paws & Claws and Wildlights.
  • Assures safety of self, staff, animals and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities; compliance with standard operating procedures; and proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assists other facilities staff when required.

  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years’ HVAC experience is highly preferred.
  • Two years of journeyman experience installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC units preferred.
  • Experience with low pressure boilers required.
  • Possession of certificate in refrigerant usage required.

Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the construction, assembly/disassembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of HVAC equipment required.
  • Ability to understand assembly instruction, operating manuals, blueprints, and wiring diagrams required.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials hazards, and safety precautions with the installation HVAC required.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring and Ohio Building Code (OBC) regulations on HVAC installation and federal, state and local laws dealing with CFC disposal required.
  • Experience with computerized temperature controls and Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes required.
  • Experience with Windows platforms preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Skill in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment used in heating and cooling required.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials required.
  • Ability to work from drawings and specifications and to effectively carry out oral and written instructions required.
  • Ability to maintain simple records required.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing is required.

Work Requirements

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner without direct supervision is required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the guest service standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks (CZFP) team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Possession of a valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
