Support the mission of the Columbus Zoo and Zoombezi Bay by ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for all guests. As a Guest Screening Security Officer, you’ll be on the front lines of guest interaction, helping to maintain safety and uphold our standards of excellence in guest service and security.

Enforce rules and regulations while overseeing our threat detection system operations at the front of the Zoo and Zoombezi Bay.

 

Responsibilities

Threat Detection & Guest Screening

  • Operate threat detection systems in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Serve as a year-round resource for the Seasonal Security team, guiding screening protocols and guest interactions.
  • Respond to escalated situations at the Guest Entry Security Pavilion, including guest complaints and screening concerns.

Emergency Response & Safety

  • Summon and direct emergency vehicles; perform crowd control when needed.
  • Actively participate in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and pass annual ERP testing.
  • Provide assistance in emergencies, including first aid, lost children, theft, and unusual incidents.

Operational Support

  • Escort special guests and vendor vehicles as needed.
  • Lock and unlock doors and gates for staff.
  • Ensure professional communication on all park radio systems.
  • Always maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Mission Alignment

  • Uphold and promote the mission of the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks (CZFP).
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 1 year of security or related experience required.
  • Preferred: 2–4 years of law enforcement, military, or relevant experience; or a two- or four-year degree in a related field.

Certifications & Technical Skills

  • First Aid, CPR, ERT, and AED certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service and maintain positive interactions.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively with CZFP team members.

Professional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to pass annual criminal background checks and comply with the CZFP drug-free workplace policy.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to remain alert and exercise sound judgment in all situations.
