Performs all the duties associated with daily operations including maintaining all water systems, HVAC Systems, electric fence/solar gates, maintenance on buildings and maintaining all aspects of the operation.  Supports new facility construction from initial site work through final project completion.  Maintains on-site roads and ensures proper functioning of all utilities.

Responsibilities

Building and Facility Maintenance

  • Perform general and preventative maintenance duties to buildings, including maintaining emergency exit lights, replacing burnt-out light bulbs, plumbing, water systems, and HVAC equipment.
  • Maintain all aspects of building maintenance such as painting, drywall repair/installation, electrical installation, heating/cooling, refrigeration repair, roof repair, and plumbing repair/installation.
  • Check all HVAC systems weekly, maintaining filters, propane heaters, and boiler systems.

Outdoor and Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Check fence voltage daily and solar gate panels; maintain and repair current fences and gates, and install new fences or gates.
  • Grade, repair, and maintain all roadways and paths.
  • Snow removal and walk care in the winter.

Operational Support and Sustainability

  • Ensure all supplies are ordered and onsite for staff use.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Constantly strive to further the mission of the organization, Empowering People. Saving Wildlife, and avidly support the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.

Qualifications

Educational and Technical Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • General maintenance skills and experiences in carpentry, electricity, plumbing, HVAC systems (including boilers), welding, road repair, and machinery.
  • Basic understanding of preventative maintenance scheduling.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to be a team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding guest service standards.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks (CZFP) team members and contacts regarding company business.

Professional and Operational Skills

  • Independent decision-making and problem-solving ability.
  • Positive professional attitude and ability to quickly adapt to changes.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols.

Compliance and Certification Requirements

  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter.
  • Possession of a valid state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks CZFP drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually.
