Responsible for all Vehicle Operation, Equipment Operation, maintenance on vehicles, maintenance on equipment, ordering parts and supplies, maintaining all aspects of the vehicle operation and maintenance operations as scheduled.

Responsibilities

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance

  • Check buses daily for accurate operation.
  • Maintain consistent vehicle and equipment service programs.
  • Repair all vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Perform diversified electrical and computerized work on vehicles and equipment, including installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, repairing generators, and replacing computerized systems.
  • Work on small engines like lawn mowers, chippers, chain saws, props, and generators.
  • Perform road/field tests to locate defects in operation and check repair work before returning vehicles/equipment to active use, using various testing/methodology devices.

Inventory and Record Keeping

  • Ensure all parts are ordered and onsite.
  • Maintain records of all vehicle and equipment repairs, subcontracted labor, and estimate information.

Safety and Compliance

  • Assure safety of self, the collection, staff, and visitors through proper safety training and techniques around animals, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Attend safety classes as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
  • Communicate any concerns with coworkers and supervisor.

Support and Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively and professionally with others in support of the Wilds’ values.
  • Provide support and assistance to all special events.
  • Assist other facilities staff when required.
  • Constantly strive to further the mission of the organization and avidly support the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks, including The Wilds, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, and the Safari Golf Club.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Technical School (2-year degree) with 1 year of paid experience or a career and technical education (CTE) in mechanics with 3 years of paid experience.

Technical Skills

  • General knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of various automobiles and trucks.
  • Proven skill in using a variety of types of automotive shop equipment and tools.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair a variety of motorized vehicles, rides, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of changes to new vehicles, warranties, and recalls.
  • Knowledge in maintenance and repair of various internal combustion systems, including diesel and propane.
  • Ability to maintain an adequate inventory of necessary supplies.
  • Employees are asked to bring their own hand tools when they begin their role.
  • Ability to generate and maintain accurate maintenance performance records.

Interpersonal and Organizational Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently and cost-effectively without direct supervision.
  • Excellent guest service skills, positively interacting with guests and upholding expectations around guest service program standards.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks team members and contacts regarding company business.

Compliance and Safety

  • Adherence to standard operating procedures, including safety protocols.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter.
  • Valid state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license, good driving record, and ability to operate standard shift vehicles.
  • Adherence to the Columbus Zoo Family of Park’s drug-free workplace policy including random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment.
  • An ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually.
