Join Our Team as a Maintenance Plumber at the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks!

Are you a skilled plumber looking for a new adventure? The Columbus Zoo Family of Parks is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Plumber to join our dynamic Facilities/Trades Maintenance team. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, ensuring our facilities run smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

Plumbing System Maintenance:

  • Installs, diagnoses and repairs, and makes necessary adjustments on plumbing systems, including but not limited to pipes (e.g. gas, water, steam, waste, and sewer), and sets fixtures and installs/replaces such items as pumps, valves/thermostats, controls, and miscellaneous fittings.
  • Inspects building facilities and equipment and provides required maintenance (e.g., checks pipes, plumbing fixtures for signs of corrosion, checks and lubricates pumps and valves, changing filters).
  • Performs acetylene and electric welding as required.

Support and Assistance:

  • Performs support duties (e.g., maintains supply inventory, completes logs, miscellaneous reports, digs ditches for pipe installation, repairs plumbing equipment and tools, and keeps plumbing shop and work areas neat and clean).
  • Provides support and assistance in all activities related to special events such as Wildlights and Zoofari.
  • Monitors public restrooms and grounds for potential problems and reports them to supervisor.
  • Provides work directions to fellow employees and/or seasonal staff as required.
  • Assists other facilities and grounds staff when required.
  • Communicate with custodial staff on a weekly basis regarding the operation of all plumbing fixtures in public restrooms.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Assures safety of self, staff, animals, and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities; compliance with standard operating procedures; and proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club, and The Wilds.

Specialized Tasks:

  • May be assigned to routinely monitor and maintain all animal and human filtration systems in animal regions.
  • May be assigned to routinely operate the Islands and water treatment plant.
  • May assist with operation of water attractions at Zoombezi Bay.
  • May be assigned to routinely monitor and maintain water quality within each system through the performance of appropriate water testing (e.g. salinity, pH, temperature, ammonia, nitrate, copper, sulfate, ORP, hardness, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, chloride, turbidity, chlorine) and keeps accurate records at the Island and water treatment plant.
  • May be assigned to operate, monitor, and maintain all equipment associated with water quality and life support systems (e.g. lab equipment, pumps, valves, filters, ozone generators, backwashes, generators) at the Islands and water treatment plant.
  • May be assigned to troubleshoot life support systems issues, take appropriate action and report issues/resolution to Trades Maintenance Supervisor and appropriate Assistant Curator.
  • May be assigned to perform preventative maintenance on all equipment associated with life support systems.
  • Participates in cross-training activities as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

What We're Looking For:

 

Education and Certification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship in plumbing issued by the U.S. Department of Labor or the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council (may be substituted for one year of journeyman plumber experience).
  • Backflow preventer inspection license required within six months of placement into position.
  • Technical School (2-year degree) in related field preferred.

 Experience and Skills:

  • 5 years’ plumbing experience preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a journeyman plumber preferred.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade required.
  • Ability to skillfully use the tools of the plumbing trade required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints is required.
  • Ability to make rough sketches of required work from oral descriptions required.
  • Knowledge in electric, carpentry, and HVAC preferred.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner without direct supervision required.

 Licenses and Compliance:

  • Possession of valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and good driving record required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.

 Work Environment and Schedule:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the “Make it G.R.E.A.T.” standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
