Provides medical care to The Wilds’ animal collection. The Staff Veterinarian has the primary responsibility for a significant portion of the clinical medical cases in the animal collection and provides training to zoological medicine residents as a member of the Conservation Medicine team.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive veterinary services to The Wilds’ animal collection.
  • Serves as a cooperative member of the Conservation Medicine team, consisting of veterinarians, residents, and technicians.
  • Maintains medical records for The Wilds’ animal collection.
  • Provides in-house education and technical training to staff, residents, and students. Participates in regular rounds sessions designed to prepare residents for ACZM board completion.
  • Promotes communication between the veterinarians, animal management staff, and curatorial staff.
  • May serve as Adjunct Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Conducts and publishes clinical research.
  • Assists Director of Conservation Medicine and Animal Management in establishing and maintaining animal diets.
  • May serve on internal committees.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Possession of D.V.M. (or similar) degree required.
  • 2-3 years of experience as a zoo veterinarian with residency in zoo animal medicine preferred.
  • Possession of a State of Ohio veterinary license and DEA license required within 6 months of employment.
  • ACZM boarded or board-eligible strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of anesthesia techniques and knowledge of remote delivery systems is vital to successfully performing the job.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art veterinary practices, computer skills (ZIMS), and knowledge of availability of medical specialists is vital to the successful performance of this job.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse staff is essential.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by interacting with guests positively and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Possession of a valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks’ drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
